Ilyana Martinez

Ilyana Martínez was born in Toronto and grew up in the U.S. and Mexico. She majored in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art & Design and did advanced studies in Florence, Italy. Ilyana is also a graphic designer and has been involved in design endeavours with prominent international museums such as the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology (Drumheller, AB), the Glenbow Museum (Calgary, AB), and the National Museum of Art (Mexico City). Her watercolours and drawings express the dynamic between two contrasting worlds: the constructed urban centre and the natural organic realm. The works are remnants of a dialogue with her surroundings.

The artist is presenting three watercolour drawings of imaginary floating cities.

Image 1: A cityscape enclosed in a medieval fortress is connected by a series of tree vines with leaves.

Image 2: Three islands containing cityscapes are floating in a white space. A grey and green horizon crosses the background.

Image 3: There is a warped representation of an infinity sign that holds two urban landscapes, one on each side. There is another abstract green shape floating in the background.
